Choosing healthy snacks for children can be really tricky these days,especially as some “healthy” foods are actually full of hidden sugar. Her are some tips for snacks that will keep our kids happy AND healthy!

  • Nuts, low-sugar yoghurts, breadsticks with hummus and cucumber, raw pepper and carrots make great snacks between meals.
  • Cheese helps neutralise acids in the mouth reducing tooth decay. Encourage your child to eat a snack sized piece of cheese after meals.
  • Swap fizzy drinks for water or milk and avoid fruit juices as they contain a high amount of natural sugar and acid. If your children have these, offer them during mealtimes only.
  • Avoid snacking on dried fruits between meals, as these also contain a lot of natural sugar and can cling to the teeth for a long time.
  • Be wary of products specifically aimed at children’s lunchboxes and always check the labels. They may say that they are free of additives etc but they may well be full of hidden salt and sugar.
